Users can access content from an app without installing it by using instant apps. They are meant to free up space on users’ devices for apps and provide easy access to an app’s dedicated feature. Google showcased a parking meter app as an example of what Android instant apps could do when they first launched. The parking meter app’s features can be used on a device without the need for an install or signup if the user can access it as an instant app. Additionally, users can test an instant app on Google Play Instant before fully downloading and installing it. An instant app’s URL can be clicked by a user through a link, banner, or another method, and it will take them straight to that app’s section. Instant apps are compatible with devices running Jellybean OS (2013) and higher, but they are limited to using apps that have been published on the Play Store.
Removing Instant Apps
What about the ability to remove instant apps?
You can uninstall or disable instant apps if your phone is "updating instant apps" too frequently. To disable immediate apps:
- Tap the gear icon to open Settings.
- Select "Google" using the menu.
- Choose "Instant apps."
- Select the option labeled "None."
Google Play Services for Instant App Downloads
However, what is the purpose of Google Play services for instant app downloads?
On Android 5.0 (API level 21) or later devices, Google Play Instant allows native apps and games to run without installation. Providing an instant experience, or enabling users to run an app or game instantly, enhances the app or game’s discoverability and encourages more frequent installations or users. With Google Play Instant, users can launch an app or game without installing it by tapping a button in the Play Store, the Google Play Games app, or a banner on a website. "Try" experiences in the Play Store and "Instant play" games in the Google Play Games app are the two categories into which instant experiences are divided. A TRY NOW button in the Play Store is used to display instantaneous experiences (as shown in Figure 1). Complete games that are packaged with Google Play Instant can have a prominent place on the Google Play Games app’s home screen.
