How to Convert an Image into a Shape

To convert an image into a form, such as a circle or rounded rectangle, use the cropping tool on the ribbon and select the CROP TO form option.

With Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, or Excel, you can crop to a shape.

Cropping an image to a desired shape is a fast way to alter its shape. The image is automatically cropped to fit the chosen shape’s geometry while keeping its proportions.

(If you wish to crop the same image into many shapes, create copies of the image and crop each one to the appropriate form separately.)

To add the picture to a Microsoft 365 file (such as a Word document, PowerPoint presentation, or Outlook email message), select INSERT > PICTURE.

Select PICTURE TOOLS > FORMAT, then click the arrow next to CROP in the SIZE category.

Choose CROP TO SHAPE from the option that displays, then click the desired shape to crop to.

Next, adjust the amount of the image that fits inside the form you’ve applied by using CROP > FIT or CROP > FILL.

To change the image’s position within the frame, pick it and drag it to the desired location.

Let’s get started on how to use Photoshop to fit an image into a form.

  1. Choose the custom shape tool in step two.

  2. As I previously stated, you can use any form to achieve this effect—from a straightforward circle or rectangle to a unique design.

  3. From the Toolbar, choose the CUSTOM SHAPE TOOL.

  4. The Rectangle Tool is nested underneath the Custom Shape Tool by default.

  5. Using the Rectangle Tool, press RIGHT-CLICK (Windows) or CONTROL-CLICK (Macintosh) and select the Custom Shape Tool from the menu.

  6. Set the TOOL MODE to "SHAPE" in step 3.

  7. Make sure the TOOL MODE option in the Options Bar is set to SHAPE while you have the Custom Shape Tool selected.
