What is the File Tab

The Office Ribbon’s FILE TAB section provides access to file functions in Microsoft Word and other Microsoft Office products.

For instance, you can access the Properties, Recent, Open, Save, and Close file options from the File tab.

One or more tabs known as file tabs are located at the top of the window when viewing a computer file’s properties.

Every FILE TAB contains specific information about the file, such as its name, size, creation and modification dates, location, and any security measures (access restrictions) applied to it.

Right-click a file and choose Properties from the pop-up menu to open the properties window.

The Microsoft Office Backstage view is available when you launch an application in Microsoft Office or after you choose the FILE tab.

If you need to create a new file, open an existing file, print, save, change options or more, Backstage is the place to do it.

The Share command can be useful if you would like to work together on your file.

You can customize how Microsoft Office functions for you by selecting the three items located in the bottom left corner of the Backstage screen.

To exit Backstage and go back to the document you were working on, simply hit the Escape key on your keyboard or use the Back arrow located at the top left of the navigation pane.

Now let’s see where I can locate the File tab.

The Microsoft Office Backstage view is available when you launch an application in Microsoft Office or after you choose the FILE tab.

Choose the FILE tab if you are already in a file and want to return to Backstage view for any other purpose, such as printing, saving, or opening another file.

Many of the same standard commands, like OPEN, SAVE, and PRINT, that were available on the FILE menu in previous Office releases are visible when you select the FILE tab.

Choose the NEW button to open a list of pre-made files, or look for more templates to get you started.

To see a list of recently edited files, select the OPEN button located on the left navigation pane. You’ll also see file locations that you can browse to find the file if it’s not listed there.

You can quickly make a copy of the current file by using SAVE AS. This is useful if you want to make a copy of this file so you can make changes without affecting the original or if you need a second copy in a different location.

You can also find the PRINT command on the Backstage navigation pane, if you’d like to print this file out or just use Print Preview to see what it would look like.

However, what distinguishes the File tab from the ribbon?

Word 2010 has redesigned the familiar File menu to replace the Office button.

There are seven tabs visible in the upper-left corner of the window.

The Ribbon is the name for the tabs and their settings.

Groups of related features are where the options are arranged under the tabs.

The options are shown on buttons with text labels and picture icons for easy identification when you select a tab.

The shortcut menu makes it easy to quickly access the most frequently used Word commands and functions.

Depending on which element you have selected, different options will be displayed.
