How to open an HTML file in Word

Word can be configured to not automatically convert file types when you open it. Instead, it will ask you what kind of file you’re trying to open, and you can select Text.

To disable it (or, alternatively, enable Confirmation of Conversion):

  1. Launch Word’s options. (In Word 2007: select Word Options after selecting the Office button. In Word 2010, click Options after displaying the File tab of the ribbon.
  2. Click ADVANCED on the dialog box’s left side.
  3. Once you reach the GENERAL section, continue scrolling through the options.
  4. Verify that the option to "Confirm File Format Conversion on Open" is checked.
  5. Select Ok.

You can also uninstall the HTML Filter by running Office Setup and deselecting it from the installed options if you never want to open rendered HTML in Word again.

As an alternative—and perhaps the simplest—use an excellent Plain Text editor or something else to complete the task. Notepad++ is what I personally use and recommend.

Locate your HTML file and select it with a right-click in Word. After making your edits, click Save. (Note that you should disable file format conversion.)

Can I open HTML in Word?

Microsoft Word can be used to convert pre-existing documents into HTML format. When creating documents for the web, use the "Save as Web Page" option.

  1. Make the selection "Save as Web Page" from the "File" menu. Select Save.
  2. The converted file (filename.htm) opens in the window once the conversion is finished. By choosing "HTML Source" from the "View" menu, you can view the HTML source code file.
  3. The formatting buttons and menu options in Microsoft Word as well as the Web toolbar options (insert hyperlink, insert image) can be used to edit the HTML file. Make sure to save your page once you are happy with how it looks.
  4. To see how your HTML file will look, open it in a WWW browser.
  5. If the publication was made in the "public_html" directory, http://udel.edu/~your_username/filename.htm will be the URL.
  6. Should you publish your work in an official university directory, http://www.udel.edu/directory_path/filename.htm will be the URL.
  7. Your student organization’s directory can be found at http://copland.udel.edu/stu-org if your page has been published.
