How to Convert a Scanned Document

With Acrobat and your scanner, you can convert a paper document directly into a PDF file.

Acrobat supports Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) drivers and TWAIN scanner drivers on Windows.

In Windows, you can use other presets according to your judgment, or you can use the Autodetect Color Mode and let Acrobat identify the content type of the paper document.

Only scanner drivers that enable the Native Interface mode of Hide Scanner allow for preset scanning.

You can use the Scan button in Windows to create a PDF if your scanner has an installed WIA driver.

To view the available options for scanning a paper document to PDF with Acrobat, navigate to All tools > Create PDF and select Scanner.

To scan a paper document to PDF on Windows, choose either the Autodetect color mode or a preset.

If prompted, select Scan More Pages, Scan Reverse Sides, or Scan Is Complete after making the necessary settings.

To improve or optimize a scanned PDF, open the document that was converted to a PDF by selecting All tools > Scan & OCR > Enhance scanned file.

On Windows, select All tools > Create a PDF > Scanner, then select a preset scan setting to configure scanning presets.

To save the preset, make any necessary adjustments to the settings and choose Save Settings.

Consult the scanner documentation for available options when troubleshooting scanner issues when scanning with Acrobat.

Choose All tools > Scan & OCR > In This File and enter the page range and language for text recognition to identify text in previously scanned documents.

By choosing All tools > Scan & OCR > In multiple files and adding the files or folders to be recognized, you can recognize text in multiple documents.

To add a text layer to the PDF that can be copied or searched, fill out the Recognize Text – General Settings dialog box and click OK.

Select All tools > Scan & OCR > Correct recognized text to fix recognized text errors. Then, make your corrections in the Recognized As box located in the Secondary toolbar.

After making each adjustment, click Accept, and when you’re done, click Close in the Secondary toolbar.
