How to Install a RAR File

If you are having trouble opening a RAR file that was sent to you, follow these steps to use WinRAR to open RAR files on a Windows computer.

  1. Download WinRAR: Visit the official WinRAR download page and get the WinRAR version that you want. We suggest the x64 (64-bit) version for the majority of contemporary PCs.

  2. Install WinRAR: Run the INSTALLER and adhere to the instructions after downloading the file.

  3. Open RAR Files: Double-click the rar file you wish to open after navigating to it. WinRAR will open it.

  4. Extract Files: You can extract files to a permanent folder on your computer for convenient access, or you can double-click a file to temporarily extract it and open it right away.

  5. Extract All Files: To extract every file, either select every file (CTRL + A) or leave every file selected, and then select EXTRACT TO from the top toolbar.

  6. Select Location: A window allowing you to select the location for your files will appear. Make sure to create a new folder for the extracted files if you don’t want them mixed in with other files, as they will go directly into the location you specify.

  7. Access Extracted Files: When the extraction is complete, you can use Windows File Explorer to access the folder where the files were extracted. These files can also be accessed by other programs; for example, you could open a picture in Photoshop.

RAR files are compressed folders holding several smaller files. Follow these steps to unzip a RAR file.

  1. Download iZip: Open the APP STORE, select SEARCH, tap the APP STORE search bar, type in IZIP, select GET, then select SEARCH, enter your Touch ID or Apple ID password, and download iZip.

  2. Open RAR File: Open the app that contains the RAR file, tap the file, and use iZip to open your RAR file. It will "open" to a gray screen with the name of the RAR file displayed in the center of it.

  3. Unzip Files: In iZip, tap the rectangle with an arrow in the lower-left corner of the screen, navigate to the right, tap the yellow folder icon to transfer the RAR file, and tap OK when prompted to unzip the files in order to unzip the RAR files.
