The most popular digital multimedia container format, MPEG-4 PART 14, or MP4, is used to store audio and video files. According to the specification, MPEG-4 Part 14 files can only have the .MP4 filename extension. The MPEG-4 Part 14 file format is nearly the same as the QuickTime File Format. MPEG-4 Part 14: MP4 file format was designed to replace the MP4 file format. In order to support MPEG-4 visual/audio codecs and different MPEG-4 System features, the MP4 file format defined some extensions over the ISO Base Media File Format. Version 2 of the MPEG-4 file format is the common name for MPEG-4 Part 14. ISO/IEC 14496-12:2004, the ISO Base Media File format, generalized the MP4 file format. MPEG-4 Part 14 permits Internet streaming. Sometimes, MPEG-4 Part 14 is used to refer to the MP4 file format.

H.264 is a suitable compression format for online platforms and offers significantly better video quality at the same reduced bitrate than other formats like MPEG-2. It also consumes less bandwidth. MP4 and MKV
A single file containing multiple audio and video tracks and subtitle files can be compressed using the free and open-source MKV container format. Because of its many advantages, MP4, which is based on the QuickTime file format, is one of the most popular file formats. Rather than the container format itself, the codecs used within the container determine the differences in video and audio quality. Because MKV files have extra features like multiple audio tracks and subtitles, they are usually larger than MP4 files. A limited number of video and audio players can play MKV files, whereas nearly all media players and operating systems can play MP4 files. While MP4 has a relatively limited range of supported codecs, MKV can store a wide variety of multimedia content. While MP4 offers better compression and cross-platform compatibility, MKV offers higher quality audio and video.
